The purpose of the Farm Mechanization Scheme (SMAM) is to promote the adoption of modern agricultural machinery and equipment among farmers to improve farm productivity, reduce manual labor, and enhance overall efficiency in farming operations. By providing subsidies and facilitating access to affordable credit, the scheme aims to make mechanization accessible to small and marginal farmers, women, and disadvantaged groups. It also encourages the establishment of Custom Hiring Centres to ensure that even farmers who cannot afford to buy machinery can benefit from mechanization services. Ultimately, SMAM seeks to modernize agriculture, increase farmers’ income, and contribute to sustainable rural development.
"Promote farm mechanization across India by providing financial support and subsidies for the purchase of agricultural machinery and equipment, thereby enhancing productivity, reducing drudgery, and improving the overall efficiency of farming operations. The Sub-Mission on Agricultural Mechanization (SMAM) scheme provides farmers with financial support through subsidies and credit-linked loans to make agricultural machinery more affordable. By promoting the use of tractors, tillers, and other modern equipment, it increases productivity, reduces labor drudgery, and enhances farmers’ income. The scheme especially benefits small and marginal farmers, women, and disadvantaged communities by encouraging equitable access and supporting the establishment of Custom Hiring Centres. Overall, SMAM helps modernize farming practices, boosts rural employment, and contributes to sustainable agricultural development."
Eligible applicants include individual farmers, farmer groups, SHGs, cooperatives, and entrepreneurs owning or cultivating agricultural land, with priority given to small, marginal, women, SC/ST farmers, and those in remote areas.
