The Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya (KGBV) scheme was launched by the Government of India in August, 2004 for setting up residential schools at upper primary level for girls belonging predominantly to the SC, ST, OBC and minorities in difficult areas.
The purpose of KGBV under Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan is to provide quality residential education to disadvantaged girls and reduce gender disparities in education.
Free of cost education to the SC/ST girls and other minorities girls in KGBVs
There are currently 159 KGBVs spread across 316 educationally backward blocks (EBBs) and 94 towns/cities. The criteria for setting up KGBV are : 1) Min. 50 girls of ST or SC or minority communities are available and who wish to study in school at elementary level.
No application is required. The decision to build KGBVs is made based on data collected by Education Deparment and SSA from Ministry of Minority Affairs and Government of Gujarat decision.
